From British Army to Electrician - Michael, Bangor

Following some time in British Army training, Michael was informed that he was unable to follow his dream of serving in the Army due to unforeseen circumstances. In light of this, Michael, from Bangor, enrolled with Môn CF to receive support with training and gaining employment in another field. Michael has now successfully obtained the CSCS qualification and is very happy in his new job as an Electrician’s mate at Kpics Limited.

On Michael’s initial appointment, he expressed that he was unsure at to what career path he would like to pursue as he had always intended on staying in the Army. In considering this, various industries and potential courses of interest were discussed with his mentor, Katie. Michael explained that he wanted to find a job that would provide job satisfaction and allow self-development.

Weekly phone calls were arranged to build up Michael’s confidence whilst creating a new CV. When working with Katie to create a CV, Michael explained that he would like a hands-on job. Michael decided he was keen to pursue a career within the Construction industry as he had previous informal experience of working with family as a labourer.

A plan was devised to book Michael onto a Health & Safety in Construction Course, and to complete some more online training courses in relation to his job goals and aspirations, including Manual Handling Awareness, and Level 2 Health and Safety in the Workplace.

After completing these courses there was a noticeable change in Michael’s confidence. Michael approached Katie for support with a job application he wished to apply for as an Electricians Mate, Katie amended his CV to match the person specification and Michael was offered an interview.

With Michael’s renewed confidence and following some interview preparation, he was successful at interview and was offered the job as an Electricians Mate. Môn CF were able to offer support in funding a CSCS course through Active Inclusion funding, however the employer was happy to support Michael with the funding and arrangement of this. Michael has now successfully obtained the CSCS qualification and is very happy in his new job as an Electrician’s mate at Kpics Limited.

Michael said, “Thanks for the help you gave me, when I left the Army I didn’t think I’d be able to get a good job but you made me feel a lot better haven’t you! I appreciate it loads 😊 “

The Gwynedd team are pleased to have played a part in building Michael’s confidence and motivation to return to employment after leaving the Army. If you find yourself in a position where you are unsure of your career options, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
