Client Success: How Perseverance Paid Off for Jacob

At Môn Communities Forward (Môn CF), we often remind our clients that the job market can change in the blink of an eye. Jacob’s recent journey is the perfect example of how staying proactive, keeping your chin up through the near-misses, and refusing to give up can lead to the ultimate problem: having to choose between two great job offers at once!

Bouncing Back from Near-Misses

Jacob came to Môn CF with a rich and varied work history, spanning the Armed Forces, retail, construction, and the marine sector, where he previously specialised in boat maintenance and repair. After leaving a previous role due to a toxic work environment, he was highly motivated to find a fresh start.

In one of his very first sessions, Jacob and his Mentor applied for a role with Stena Line. He had all the right qualifications, and the interview went brilliantly. Sadly, due to an incredibly high volume of applicants, he just missed out on the final selection.

It was a tough blow that knocked his confidence, especially since he felt he had it in the bag. But rather than letting it slow him down, Jacob came right back to the drawing board.

Fine-Tuning the Strategy

Together with his Mentor, Jacob shifted his focus to building iron-clad resilience and sharpening his skills:

• CV Modernisation: They reshuffled his CV into a sleek, modern format tailored specifically to the practical industries he was targeting.

• Mock Interviews: They ran intensive practice interviews. Jacob scored incredibly high, presenting himself as the polished, capable professional he is.

With a fresh outlook, the interviews started rolling in. Jacob was shortlisted for highly technical roles, including a ship welder and a kayak wrapper. Once again, he faced the frustration of just missing out to candidates who had slightly longer field experience.

However, this time was different. The feedback from employers was overwhelmingly positive, with several companies telling Jacob they were keeping him on their books for future openings. His confidence was officially back.

The Turning Point: From No Offers to Two!

Jacob stayed relentless and kept applying. Within the exact same week, his hard work culminated in a brilliant dilemma. He was offered two completely different jobs within a single day of each other:

1. Customer Representative with the William Hill shop in town.

2. Counter & Trade Assistant with local builders' merchant C.L. Jones.

Jacob was absolutely made up. After weeks of narrow misses, he suddenly had the power of choice. Because it aligned perfectly with his long-term future aspirations and his background in construction and hands-on work, Jacob happily accepted the position with C.L. Jones.

A Lesson in Staying Power

Jacob is currently waiting on his official start date with C.L. Jones, and the whole team at Môn CF could not be happier for him. His Mentor notes that Jacob’s story carries a lesson for anyone else currently on the job hunt:
